The Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) and Key West Municipal Solar Project announced the completion of a solar demonstration project to build a large solar power project in central western Florida on Wednesday, August 23, 2016, at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) headquarters in Tallahassee, Florida. The Florida Municipal Solar Project, a partnership between FM PA and KeyWest Municipal Energy Corporation (KMEC), has announced its commitment to providing customers with renewable energy in the most cost-effective way: by building and operating large-scale solar energy projects. In January 2016, the FlaMPA was established in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Florida State University (FSU) and Florida Power & Light Company (FPLC) as a joint venture between the Florida Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of the State of Florida and Keys Power and Light Co. (KEY West Power Company) as part of an agreement for a solar demonstration project to be built in Key East, Florida, as well as Florida's largest municipal utility.
The system will be jointly owned by FMPA and NOAA and will operate on the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOOAS). The first large-scale solar power project of the Florida Municipal Solar Project is located on a 1.5 hectare site in the Key East area and is scheduled to go into operation in spring 2010.
The Turkey Point power plant in Homestead generates electricity for Key West and the Florida Keys. Keys Energy Services buys the power from the plant and transmits it to the Lower Keys and Key East via a transmission line from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) in Miami.
